The 1,700-mile Alaska Highway, connecting the contiguous United States to Alaska through Canada, was formally opened. Building had begun after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in Hawaii the previous year, and the road was first used to transport military supplies. It opened to the public in 1948. Legendary over many decades for being a rough, challenging drive, the highway is now paved over its entire length.
