Merle Bettenhausen crashed into the outside wall on the backstretch during the USAC Champ Car Michigan 200 staged at the Michigan International Speedway, Michigan (US). He tried to climb out of the car while it was still going but his right arm was caught inbetween the moving car and the backstretch wall and was severed, ending his racing career.
