Bobby Allison used a late-race surge past Richard Petty to win the Northwestern Bank 400 at North Wilkesboro (North Carloina, US) Speedway. Petty, who led 211 of the 400 laps, faded to 3.5 seconds back at the checkered flag. Pole-starter Benny Parsons took third as Dale Earnhardt claimed fourth, matching his best finish to that point in his career.
