William C. Durant founded General Motors, consolidating several motor manufacturers, including Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac. The company continued to grow, going on to buy out Chevrolet, Delco Electronics, the Fisher Body Company and Frigidaire. In 1929 General Motors surpassed Ford to become the leading American passenger-car manufacturer, and by 1941 the company was the largest automotive manufacturer in the world.
