Walter Baumer


Saturday 17th October 1908

Born on this day, Walter Baumer, 1930’s factory driver of the Austin Motor Company and became a member of the Mercedes Benz Grand Prix teams in 1938-39 and drove the Silver Arrows in the Grand Prix of Bern/Switzerland, the Germany Grand Prix, the Grand Prix of Donington and the Belgrade Grand Prix. In 1940 Walter Bäumer Sn. won the Mille Miglia together with Huschke von Hanstein in a BMW 328 Touring coupe. Sadly he died when his car door opened in a corner as he was being kissing a girl. He fell into a field and received a fatal wound to his neck from a sharp wooden object.
