Two New Jersey police officers were killed when they inadvertently drove off the Lincoln Highway Bridge , which spans the Hackensack River between Jersey City and Kearny. The drawbridge was open at the time but the bridge’s warning signals were not functioning, so the police officers drove off the edge, having just delivered flares to warn motorists of the same malfunction. The bridge is now part of the modern-day US Route 1-9 Truck.
