Tickets went on sale for the first 500-mile stock car race at the new Darlington Raceway, South Carolina. Prices ranged from $3 general admission to $10 for lower row “box seats.” The event was sanctioned by the Central States Racing Association after NASCAR turned down the initial offer from track president Harold Brasington.
