Thomas Midgley (55), key figure in a team of chemists, led by Charles F. Kettering, that developed the tetraethyllead additive to petrol as well as some of the first chlorofluorocarbons, died in Ohio, US. In 1940, at the age of 51, Midgley contracted poliomyelitis, which left him severely disabled. He devised an elaborate system of ropes and pulleys to help others lift him from bed. He died of strangulation after being entangled in the device.
