The UK Government introduced a 50mph speed limit to conserve fuel, as oil prices rose five-fold from $2.50 to $11.65 a barrel in a year. Garage queues for petrol became commonplace and such scenes were repeated throughout the industrialized world. The economic downturn triggered a global depression resulting in a slump in car sales.
