The Tamar Bridge, the first major suspension bridge (331 metre long) to be constructed in the UK after the Second World War, was officially opened by The Queen Mother. Carrying traffic on the A38 between Cornwall and Devon over the River Tamar, in 2001 it became the world’s first suspension bridge to be widened (from three to five lanes) using cantilevers.
