The Strand Underpass that connects Waterloo Bridge to Kingsway near Holborn in London was officially opened. Tunnel headroom is just 12 ft 6 in (3.8 m), so an electronic ‘eye’ is used to alert drivers of tall vehicles and divert them to an ‘escape route’ to the left of the entrance. Some high vehicles do occasionally still try to go through and so get stuck.
