The London congestion charge for most motor vehicles entering the Central London area was introduced

The London congestion charge for most motor vehicles entering the Central London area was introduced. Initially set at £5, the daily charge had be paid by the registered keeper of a vehicle that entered, left or moved around within the congestion charge zone between 7am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday. Failure to pay the charge resulted in a fine of at least £50.
