The Indianapolis 500 was stopped on lap 19 due to rain and completed the next day (May 31). Parnelli Jones’ STP Granatelli turbine car (“Silent Sam”) led for 171 laps until a transmission bearing failed on lap 197 and Jones coasted to a halt. A.J. Foyt won his third 500 after working his way through a multi-car crash, involving Bobby Grim and Chuck Hulse, came off of turn four of his 200th lap. The race was stopped immediately leaving Foyt as the only finisher (Second place, Al Unser, is stopped on his 198th lap).
