The first race arranged for promotional purposes began in Paris. The 537-mile Circuit du Nord (Paris-Arras-Paris) ‘alcohol race’, sponsored by the French Ministry of Agriculture to promote the use of alcohol as a fuel, was won by Maurice Farman, who averaged 44.8 mph in his 40-bhp Panhard et Levassor.
