The first Ford Mustang was sold to a 22 year old teacher, Gail Wise

Wednesday 15th April 1964

The first Ford Mustang was sold to a 22 year old teacher, Gail Wise. She went to Johnson Ford in Chicago. After a tour of the showroom turned up nothing of interest, the salesman said “I’ve got something in the back that’s really new” — a light blue Mustang convertible, fully loaded with a 260 V8 and a power top.” And although the salesman wasn’t supposed to sell the vehicle until April 17, he, like any good salesman would do, sold it to Wise two days early. Wise wasn’t sure why the salesman sold her the vehicle, but she was happy to purchase it for $3,347.50 with a $400 trade-in for a 1958 Chevrolet. “On the drive home I found out how special this car was because everybody was flagging me down to slow down and they were waving at me, giving me high-fives,” she said. “I felt like a movie star.”
