The British Government’s classification of roads was published

Sunday 1st April 1923

The British Government’s classification of roads was published. The titles Class I and Class II changed to A and B, with lesser roads being classed as C and D or U roads. Interestingly the C, D and U classifications are not widely known, as they very rarely appeared on roads signs or published maps, although they were still used by central government for planning purposes. It had been planned to include C on road signs, but the decision was quickly reversed but not before some has been erected.
