The “Artmobile,” the world’s first mobile art gallery, began touring Virginia with an exhibition of art objects, making its first stop in Fredericksburg. The Artmobile was an all-aluminum trailer, measuring over 30 feet in length with an interior height of nearly 80 feet. The mini museum sought to bring items from the VMFA’s collection to far-flung areas of the state. Wild though it may seem, the walls of the truck were lined with immensely valuable works by 16th- and 17th-century Dutch painters –
including an original triptych by Hieronymus Bosch.
