The AAA dropped out of sanctioning racing after the 1955 Vukovich crash at the Indianapolis 500 and public outcry that briefly followed, and the tragedy at Le Mans that same year. The USAC was formed to sanction Indianapolis style racing. Pat Flaherty won.
