The 8-mile Hsuehshan Tunnel in Taiwan opened to traffic, connecting the city of Taipei to the north-eastern county of Yilan and cutting down the journey time from 2 hours to just 30 minutes. Vehicles travelling through the tunnel must not exceed the 70 km/h (44 mph) limit, otherwise the drivers face a hefty fine. Double solid lines prohibit lane changes and automated road-rule-enforcement cameras are used to monitor speeders, tailgaters and those who unlawfully change lanes.
