Taking the lead when a blown tire sent Marvin Panch into the wall with 11 laps to go, Junior Johnson won the NASCAR GN ‘Gwyn Staley Memorial’ on the .625 mile paved North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina. Johnson had led a total of 345 laps when he made an unscheduled stop for a tire change on lap 370. Panch then took a comfortable lead in the Wood Brothers Ford until a tire blew and he hit the wall on lap 389. Johnson moved his Ford back out front and led to the checkered, finishing 7 seconds ahead of Bobby Johns in a Holman-Moody Ford.
