Sir Malcolm Campbell set a new World Land Speed Record of 272.46 mph in his car – Campbell Special, at Daytona Beach, Florida. The 47 year old speed fanatic, who learned to drive while still at school thought he was going to die during the run when the massive car, powered by an aeroengine hit a bump on the 20 mile long beach and flew through the air for 30 ft. “It was a terrible tussle to get her straight again”, he said.
