The current day design is surely not drafted over a night. A great historic evolution is behind the success of modern day design that is facilitating our commute in routine. Though the history dates back to the 3200 BC that was a round wooden piece with a hole for axle when these wheels were first brought into shape to facilitate transportation. The first vehicle to avail the practical implication of such a wheel was a chariot.
It was the initial discovery that revolutionized the transportation industry, but it didn’t exceed well in modifying the wheel design to perfection. And, it remained somewhat in the same design until the 19th century. Today, we can either appreciate or criticize different designs and brands of tires, but these all have gone through a continuous and never-ending struggle of an entire industry.

The beginning of Pneumatic Tire

In the year 1888, the advent of gasoline cars was empowered new design tires. These metal tires were covered by rubber and inflated with air pressure. This was the first modern evolution that resulted in pneumatic tires.
The addition of rubber to metal tires was a revolutionary step and an amazing deal for the people, who were only familiar with wooden and bare metal tires. The uniqueness of pneumatic tires made it popular as soon as it launched with gasoline cars as doubles the comfort of moving across the city.
It was a major advancement towards making the driving smooth and safer that’s why it got featured instantly in a car race hold in Paris in 1895. It gives those products an official entry into the automobile industry.   

Tread Tire came into being soon

The year 1905 is marked by the discovery of a tread tire. Tread is an integral part of a tire that comes into direct interaction with the surface of the road. The pneumatic tires were unable to hold a strong road grip because of its thin front that’s why tread tires were manufactured as a safety solution.
Road surface can either be wet, dry, slippery, or rough and tough. Tread tires were manufactured with thick rubber to ensure the vehicle holds a strong grip and avoid unfavorable circumstances.

The innovation of Tire Material

In 1920, various manufacturers tried the creation of tires from various materials. Until 1913, the entire automobile industry relied on the extraction of natural rubber for the production of tires.
The extraction of rubber from nature and reshaping it for the production of the tire was itself a painstaking job and a time-consuming process. This proved to be a restriction that making the automobiles popular among common people. The solution to popularization gave birth to the production of synthetic rubber.
It was Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company, who started a complete assembly line for production of automobiles and makes them available to the common man. It was the beginning of the increasing demand for quality tires which was fulfilled by Du Pont, an American corporation with the production of synthetic rubber. This gave freedom to the rubber making industry to mass produce tires and stop relying on the collection and processing of the natural rubber.

1923 brought Balloon Tire to the forefront

Balloon Tires were introduced in 1923 that required low air pressure in order to enhance tread interaction with the road. Tires will low air pressure were used by multiple car types as these were considered an effective alternative for improving road safety.

1940 was the year of advancement in Tire Structure

With the advent of time, the automobile manufacturers observed the fuel consumption is because of the high size and weight of the cars, as well the tires it uses. The manufacturers tried to reduce the car weight with multiple design modifications of the vehicles they produce.
It was then followed by the creation of tubeless tires in 1947 that further reduced the friction and eventually achieved fuel efficiency for the cars.

Radial Tire carried the saga of fuel efficiency

The manufacturing of tubeless tires has opened a new horizon of producing rubber products that are fast, durable, safe, and fuel-efficient as well. In continuation of the same, radial tires were invented in the 1950s. In radial tires, the cords and carcass plies were planted in a vertical direction for a sophisticated driving experience.
The low deformation of radial tires makes it a suitable match for fuel-efficient vehicles. Its tread has an equal and stable interaction with the road surface that reduces the friction level and ensures safety despite high-speed driving.

Tire Safety became the major concern for manufacturers

From 1970 onwards, the tire manufacturers started focusing on improving the durability of tires to allow drivers continue long distance journeys without worrying about tire repair or replacement. It is considered a significant step towards the popularization of automobiles after switching to synthetic rubber from the natural one.
The dream was achieved with the development of run-flat tires in 1979 which had a durable design. The drivers became confident with such an innovation as, for them, the sudden punctures in between a long journey has a complete chaos.

UHP Tires had an enhanced tire performance

UHP stands for Ultra-High-Performance tires that were developed in the 1980s and were regarded as the hallmark of enhanced performance. These products exhibited an excellent drivability, cornering, speeding, and braking for heavy as well as low weight vehicles.
A UHP tire is known to be a wheel that has an equal or higher rim diameter than 16 inches. It has an aspect ratio to be 55 or less than that, whereas the speed was symbolized by greater than V. These features, collectively, contributed to the superior performance of the tires.  

In 2000, Eco Tuning Tires were developed

The tire manufacturers have worked in fuel efficiency, durability, and performance till the end of 20th century. It was the time to make tires and rubber products eco-friendly as well.
The automotive industry has sorted the problem of environmental pollution with the creation of electric and hydrogen cars. But, there has to be something done on the part of time manufacturers. They further focused the fuel consumption.
Thus, eco-tuning tires were developed in the year of 2000. The less a car consumes fuel or energy, the less it wastes natural resources.

The Future of tires

The development in improving the end product continues to date. In 2012, the Hankook went a step further in creating tires without the user of air pressure. These were called non-pneumatic tires (NPT). This product was manufactured with a combination of various materials so that it can either be recycled or reused after its useful life expires.
There is no end to innovation. The tire manufacturers are not confined to a technology. As soon as the technology and methodologies enhance, they will put it into their products to come up with the most reliable and safe solutions.
