Ricky Rudd notched his first win in NASCAR’s premier series, taming the road course at Riverside (California, US) International Raceway. The victory was also the first of many to come for Richard Childress Racing and its famed No. 3. Bill Elliott wound up second, seven seconds back at the end, with Harry Gant third. Pole-starter Darrell Waltrip, Rudd’s main competition in the late stages, faded to a seventh-place finish with a deflated tire.
