Richard Petty rolled from the pole position to a dominant win in the Capital City 500 at Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway, Virginia, US. Petty took command with Cale Yarborough crashed out in the 121st lap and led the rest of the 500-lap main event on the .542-mile asphalt track. Benny Parsons finished second, half a lap behind at the finish. Richie Panch took third, seven laps off the pace.
