Petrol in Britain rose fourpence-halfpenny to two shillings a gallon. The Secretary of the AA stated that this would deter many from buying the new popularly-priced generation of small cars. This was not the first time the AA complained about the rising cost of petrol – four years earlier 1,250,000 motorists signed a petition calling for a law to control its price.
