Peter Walker, the UK’s Secretary for Trade and Industry, told the House of Commons that due to the Middle East crisis the government was printing 16 million petrol-ration books. Drivers would have to collect them from post offices. Details of the proposed rationing were not revealed, but the previous time that petrol had been rationed – during the Suez crisis of 1956 – motorists were allowed 200 miles of motoring per month.
