Paul Goldsmith passed Richard Petty with five laps left to win the Volunteer 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway (Tennessee. US), marking the last of his nine victories in NASCAR’s top series. Goldsmith, who led a total of 84 laps, finished three car-lengths ahead of Petty, who paced 336 of the 500 circuits. David Pearson took third place, four laps behind the lead pair.
