Paul Goldsmith

Born on this day, Paul Goldsmith, a nine-time winner in NASCAR’s premier series who also enjoyed a successful motorcycle racing career. Goldsmith prevailed in the final race on the Daytona Beach Road Course in 1958, driving a Smokey Yunick-prepared Pontiac from the pole position. The Parkersburg, W.Va., native also holds the distinction of being the only man to win at the 4.2-mile beach-road layout on a motorcycle and in a stock car. Goldsmith, who last competed in NASCAR in 1969, stayed active in the sport as a pilot who doubled as an auto parts supplier.
