Nicolas Carnot (36), a pioneer in the development of the internal combustion engine, died in Paris. The import of advanced British engines dismayed Carnot, for he saw how far behind French design had fallen. However, his work would change that as he developed the Carnot cycle and Carnot efficiency that improved the efficiency of all types of engines.
