NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian Z. France announced radical changes to the method used to determine the annual champion in 2004. Officially called the “Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup,” the new points structure involved the top 10 ­drivers in the points standings through the first 26 races to compete for the title over the final 10 races.
