Max Stewart drove to his second straight Tasman Championship Formula 5000 victory, winning round 5 at Oran Park Raceway. Stewart led the first 3 laps in his Lola T330-Chevrolet before giving way to John McCormack, who in turn lost the lead to Johnnie Walker a third of the way through the 90 lap race. Stewart regained the lead with 40 laps to go and was never headed. Walker, winner of round 1 in Levin, NZ, finished 2nd in a Repco-Holden powered Lola T332 and Warwick Brown 3rd in a Lola T332-Chevrolet. Three time defending Tasman champ Graham McRae’s dismal series continued. This time the McRae GM2 was perfect, but McRae was disqualified for joining the race from the pits, where he was changing a wheel when the green flag fell. Stewart’s win put him 2 points ahead of Peter Gethin and 3 points ahead of McCormack with 3 races left.
