Marvin Panch scores his final victory in NASCAR’s premier series in unusual fashion, with Richard Petty taking over his car in relief and driving to the checkered flag in the World 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, North Carolina, US. Panch, who retired later in the season, exited the car dealing with a nagging racing injury, but was credited with his 17th career win. Petty started on the pole, but had retired with engine failure after 236 of the 400 laps, making him available for the relief effort. G.C. Spencer finished second, two laps down, with Don White third.
