Mario Andretti drove his Ford powered Brawner-Hawk to victory in the 150 mile USAC Championship race on the 1 mile paved Trenton Speedway, New Jersey, US. Andretti led every lap of the race and lost his only serious challenger when A.J. Foyt retired with a broken suspension on the 86th lap. Roger McCluskey finished a distant 2nd in his Eagle-Ford, the only other driver to complete all 150 laps. It was the debut for the new Hawk chassis, which was scheduled to debut at Phoenix until Andretti crashed it in practice.
