Ludovico Scarfiotti

Wednesday 18th October 1933

Born on this day, Ludovico Scarfiotti, Italian racer. The nephew of Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli, Scarfiotti captured the hearts of his countrymen with an enormously popular victory in the 1966 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. When his team-mate Mike Parkes was badly injured at Spa-Francorchamps, Scarfiotti, already depressed by Bandiniís death at Monaco a month earlier, virtually retired. However his love of racing brought him back in 1968 with Cooper-BRM in F1 and Porsche in the European Mountain Championship. It was at the wheel of a 910 Bergspyder that he tragically lost his life in practice for the second round at Berchtesgarten Rossfeld in Germany. He died at age 35 in 1968.
