What to Look for When Shopping for a Sound System

Getting a new sound system for your car can be super exciting. Some people look forward to getting them in their cars just to blast their sound systems. It can be an investment though and one that you need to think carefully about. We are going to give you some tips to help you pick out the perfect sound system for your vehicle.

How many channels do you need?

Amplifiers come in a variety of different configurations. The number of channels that you need will be dependent on the number of speakers that your sound system is going to have in total. The general rule is that you will need to have one channel for each speaker that you want to use in your car. If you have four speakers, you will typically want 4 channels.

If all you are only going to add a subwoofer to a sound system that has already been installed, then a single channel amp should be adequate. The units with 2,4 or 6 channels will typically be more flexible and give you more options to work with. An amp with two channels can allow you to build a system with two woofers and two coaxial speakers. If you want knocking subs and want to add more power to your speakers, a 4 channel amp can be a perfect fit for you. It can get more complicated, but this is a general idea.

Is your head unit compatible with your amp?

Are you building your sound system from the ground up? If so, then you will want to buy a head unit with built-in preamp outputs. You will also want to get an amp that has line level inputs. That will allow you to have a clear and unamplified signal that passes through to the amp. This will give you the clearest sound that you can possibly get.

It can be a bit more challenging if you are working with a factory head unit. In this case, you will want to get an amp with speaker level inputs. That way you will still get a better sound than the one you would hear without the external amp. You can actually go to car audio logic for more info on amplifiers.

Does my amp have adequate power?

This tip is one of the most important and very critical to the sound quality of your speakers. This is why it can be a good idea to pick your speakers before you pick your amp. You need to be sure that your amp can power your speakers and your subs if you decide to install subwoofers.

What part of the car will I be installing the amp in?

You will need to take accurate measurements of the spots where you plan to install your speakers and subwoofers. The design of your particular vehicle has not been accounted for when it comes to this sound system. Cars coming out the factory do not come like this, so you will need to do your due diligence to make sure the system fits.
