Lee Petty prevailed in the first race in NASCAR’s top series at Richmond (Virginia, US) Fairgrounds’ half-mile dirt track. Dick Rathman finished second in a ’52 Hudson behind Petty’s ’53 Dodge with pole-starter Buck Baker third.
