Lee Petty drove his Plymouth to victory in the tragic 250-mile NASCAR Grand National event at Langhorne Speedway, Pennsylvania, US. Rookie driver Larry Mann, competing in only his sixth race, overturned on the 211th lap and died of ­massive injuries. Mann defied a long-standing racing taboo by painting his Hudson green.
