Saturday 23rd April 2005

Kurt Busch scored his first win of the season with a dominating performance in the Subway Fresh 500 at Phoenix Raceway. Busch, who led 219 laps on his way to his 12th career NASCAR Cup Series win, had to hold off a hard charging Michael Waltrip to the checkered flag. Waltrip banged his Chevrolet off the wall twice in a futile effort to run down Busch for the win, but had to settle for second, his first top-five finish since Sonoma the previous season. Busch’s margin of victory was 2.315 seconds in his first win since Loudon in September of 2004.
