Jeff Gordon started 36th in the DieHard 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, Alabama, US one of the worst qualifying efforts of his career. After the halfway point, Gordon flexed his muscles. Gordon drove past Mark Martin and led the final six laps to score the victory. Ten drivers exchanged the lead 27 times in the hotly contested affair.
