Jaguar XF 2016 VS BMW 5 Series

The world’s luxury car market is full of superb luxury cars, but if you are looking to buy a new luxury sedan in the Indian market, you must be considering the BMW 5 Series and the Jaguar XF among others. Both these fantastic luxury sedans are mid-sized models and are placed below their respective maker’s flagship models – the BMW 7 Series and the Jaguar XJ sedan. These two rivals are not only similar in positioning, but are also quite similar in terms of capabilities, plethora of premium features and performance. However, one might always wonder which one is a worthy buy? Here, we are trying to find out which is a better buying option for the Indian luxury car buyer. Engine & Transmission

The Jaguar XF 2016 is currently offered in two petrol and two diesel engine choices. The top-end XFR petrol model comes packed with a massive 5.0-liter unit with 8 cylinders. This petrol engine has the capability to develop a max power of 502.9 bhp between 6000 to 6500 rpm along with 625 Nm of top torque at 2500 – 5500 rpm. The base petrol model gets a 4 cylinder, 2.0-liter unit with turbocharger, which has the ability to pump out a peak power of 237.4 bhp at 5500 rpm along with a max torque of 340 Nm at 1750 rpm. On the other hand, when it comes to the diesel version of the XF, the base diesel trim including the new Aero Sport trim model are packed with a 4 cylinder 2.2-liter unit with direct fuel injection technology. This mill has the capability to churn out a max power of 187.7 bhp at 3500 rpm and a top torque of 450 Nm at 2000 rpm. The other diesel engine option is a 6-cylinder unit with a displacement of 2993 cc. This motor is also empowered with direct injection system and is good to generate a max power of 270.9 bhp at 4000 rpm and a hammering peak torque of 625 Nm at 2000 rpm. All the above mentioned petrol and diesel mills are coupled with a sophisticated 8 speed automatic transmission gearbox. For gearbox repair ensure that you use a specialist outfit.

On the other hand, the BMW 5 Series is offered in two diesel engine options to choose from. The luxury vehicle’s Prestige Plus and Luxury Line model trims come powered by a 4 cylinder 2.0-liter twin turbo charged diesel motor. This in-line engine gets empowered with common rail based direct injection system and has the capability to churn out a top power of 190 bhp at 4000 rpm and a max torque of 400 Nm between 1750 to 2500 rpm. This engine gets paired to a refined 8 speed Steptronic automatic transmission. The high end 6 cylinder 3.0-liter diesel mill has a displacement capacity of 2993 cc and is good enough to deliver 258 bhp of peak power at 4000 rpm along with an impressive torque output of 540 Nm in the range of 1500 – 3000 rpm. This diesel mill is also paired to the same advanced 8 speed Steptronic Sport automatic gearbox

Mileage

The Jaguar XF’s 5.0 L petrol motor offers a maximum fuel efficiency of 8.62 km per liter, while the 2.0 L petrol engine offers the mileage of 10.8 km per liter. On the other hand, the luxury sedan’s 3.0 L diesel mill returns 14.74 km per liter, while the 2.2 L offers the fuel economy of 16.36 km per liter.
The BMW 5 Series’ diesel motors are braced with an advanced fuel supply system that enables the sedan to offer better fuel economy. Its 2.0 L mill offers a max mileage of 18.12 km per liter which is around 15 km per liter in the busy city roads. On the other hand, the luxury car’s 3.0 L motor has the ability to deliver a fuel efficiency of a max 14.69 Kmpl that comes down to the decent 11 km per liter in the traffic stricken urban roads.

Features

Both the luxury cars are certainly packed to the brim with great features. The new 2016 Jaguar XF comes loaded to impress with equipments such as a powerful air conditioning system with dual zone climate control, rear AC vents, cruise control, remote control boot and fuel lid opening, power steering wheel with tilt adjustments. There several other features like front and rear armrests, Auto headlamps, rain sensing wipers, electrically heated, auto dimming power foldable wing mirrors along approach lamps as well as side repeaters, rear wiper and rear defogger, auto washer and much more.
The BMW 5 Series is massive on comfort features and offers a plethora of amazing premium features among which the most noteworthy is the head-up display with a multi-color TFT screen along with BMW ConnectDrive with BMW apps, Bluetooth and USB interface, voice control, office functions and much more. Other features include HiFi loudspeaker with eight speakers, iDrive with 22.3cm touchscreen display, a rear seat entertainment system with two 23.4 cm screen, electrically adjustable front seats with lumbar support and memory function, a rear center armrest, inside rear view mirror with automatic anti-dazzling feature, automatic cruise control, electrically adjustable ORVMs with anti-dazzling feature and memory, automatic headlamps and more.

The XF comes braced with a long list of safety and security features including 8 airbags, ABS and EBD, traction control, ESP (Electronic Stability Program), pedestrian contact sensing system, front and rear cameras, remote control central locking and security system, front and rear parking sensor, fog lamps, 3-point seat belts, etc.
The BMW 5 Series comes with attentiveness assist, 6 airbags, ABS with emergency brake assist, advanced electronic immobilizer, crash sensors, run-flat tyres feature along with runflat indicator, anti lock braking along with function, dynamic stability control, passive pedestrian protection, BMW’s intelligent maintenance system, power parking brake with auto hold function and more.

Final Words

Both the luxury saloons are fantastic and one can’t go wrong with either of them. The BMW 5 Series is priced between Rs. 50.5 lakhs and 62.0 lakhs, while the Jaguar XF costs between Rs. 47.5 and 72.21 lakhs. While it’s a matter of the buyers’ personal choice, we do feel that the BMW 5 Series offers better value and ownership experience.
