Jack Brabham became the first man to win the World Drivers Championship in a car he had built himself

Sunday 4th September 1966

Jack Brabham became the first man to win the World Drivers Championship in a car he had built himself. At the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Brabham watched from the pits as John Surtees who needed victory to win the title, retired after 32 laps with engine trouble.
