It became a specific offence to use a mobile phone in your hand whilst driving in the UK. There was a £60 fixed penalty with three penalty points for the offence, but this could rise to £1,000 (£2,500 for drivers of goods vehicles, buses or coaches) and up to 2 years in jail on a court conviction for more serious cases.
