In China a new lottery system was introduced with the aim to restrict the number of new cars in its notoriously gridlocked capital. Beijing counted 4.76 million vehicles, up from 2.6 million in 2005. The first batch of 20,000 new number plates were awarded by lottery on 25 January 2011, with a new batch of plates made available every month.
