Herb Thomas dived underneath his brother Donald with 34 laps to go and held on to win the 100 mile NASCAR Grand National race on the 1 mile dirt Orange Speedway, North Carolina. Donald was leading on lap 65 when he had to swerve around a flipping car. Running several lengths behind, Herb used the opportunity to grab the lead. The brothers Hudson Hornets ran nose to tail the remaining laps with Herb edging Donald by a car length.
