Henry Royce’s Manchester engineering company produced its first motor car, a 10 hp 2 cylinder model, which was driven from the factory to Royce’s home and back, a distance of some 15 miles. Subsequently, all reports relating to this event referred to 31st March as being the date, to prevent any chance of it becoming associated with April Fool’s Day.
