Gustave Otto, the son of internal combustion engine pioneer Nikolaus Otto, organized Gustav Otto Flugmaschinenfabrik Muchen. Otto’s Munich-based aero-engineering firm would later merge with Karl Rapp’s firm to form the Bayerische Motoren-Werke, or BMW.
