Giuseppe ‘Nino’ Farina won the Italian Grand Prix to become the first winner of the newly instituted drivers’ championship. The Ferrari 375F1 4.5 litre car make its debut, with Alberto Ascari at the wheel, but the car retired with engine trouble. Philippe Etancelin, driving a Talbot-Lago T26C, who was placed 5th, became the oldest at the age of 53 years, 248 da to earn points in a Formula 1 championship race.
