French driver Victor Hémery, driving a petrol-powered Darracq automobile, set a new land-speed record of 109.589 mph (176.46 km/h) in Arles, France. Hémery’s record stood until 1906, when American Fred Marriot set a record of 121.573 mph (195.65 km/h) in a steam-powered Stanley.
