Ernest Marples

Monday 9th December 1907

Born on this day, Ernest Marples, British politician and a proponent of legislating older vehicles off public roads. As Minister of Transport, Marples oversaw the introduction of parking meters and the provisional driving licence in 1958 and two Transport Acts. He left the office when the Conservative Party lost the 1964 British general election.
