Edward, Prince of Wales drove an 8-bhp Ford Type Y Popular off the production line in Dagenham. Ford presented the vehicle to the King George Hospital in Ilford as a means for it to raise funds. The car was fitted with a commemorative plaque that read, ‘This car was first started and driven by the Prince of Wales, at Dagenham Works – 13 July 1934.’
